This gesture follows a viral video of Rodrigo's boyfriend, Louis Partridge, interacting with Swift at the music awards. Swift appeared to gesture toward Rodrigo and Sabrina Carpenter, who were chatting nearby.

Rodrigo and Carpenter had a history of drama over their shared ex, Joshua Bassett. In 2021, fans speculated that Rodrigo referenced Carpenter in her hit song “drivers license,” particularly the lyrics about her ex spending time with "that blonde girl / Who always made me doubt / She’s so much older than me / She’s everything I’m insecure about." Carpenter later responded to the attention the song brought her with her own track, "because i liked a boy."

Regarding Taylor Swift, rumors of a feud between her and Rodrigo surfaced in 2023 following the release of Guts. However, Rodrigo denied any drama, telling Rolling Stone in September 2023, “I don’t have beef with anyone. I’m very chill. I keep to myself. I have my four friends and my mom, and that’s really the only people I talk to, ever. There’s nothing to say. There’s so many Twitter conspiracy theories. I only look at alien-conspiracy theories.”

The feud rumors stemmed from a songwriting issue. Swift and Jack Antonoff were retroactively credited as songwriters for Rodrigo’s Sour track “Deja Vu,” due to similarities between its bridge and their song “Cruel Summer.” The credit, which added Swift and Antonoff to the song’s royalties, came three months after Rodrigo mentioned being inspired by "Cruel Summer" in an April 2021 interview. Rodrigo explained in Rolling Stone that the credit was handled by teams rather than by her directly. “It was more team-on-team,” she said. “So, I wouldn’t be the best person to ask.”

At the 2023 Grammys, Swift showed her support for Rodrigo by singing and dancing along to Rodrigo’s performance of “Vampire.”

In September 2023, Rodrigo also addressed speculation that “Vampire” was about Swift. She told The Guardian, “I never want to say who any of my songs are about. I’ve never done that before in my career and probably won’t. I think it’s better to not pigeonhole a song to being about this one thing.” On the subject of Swift, she added, “I was very surprised when people thought that.”

Some fans speculated that Rodrigo’s song “The Grudge” from Guts might also be about Swift, but Rodrigo has never confirmed the subject of the song.

But now, with a simple Instagram like and a viral hug, Rodrigo has signaled that any past issues with Swift and Carpenter are firmly behind her.
